St. Andrew's Day celebration -Burn's Nicht next Jan.?Some folks had asked about what I was having Hailey do for St. Andrew's at my church. So here's a little wrap-up.
Although St. Andrew's day is Nov. 30, we put on a Scottish-oriented service at Grace Episcopal Church in New Tampa. This past Sunday was the last of Pentecost before Advent, and called Christ the King Sunday in the Anglo-Roman Kalendar. It is a day for apprciation of the universal dominion of Jesus in all nations/cultures, etc, and Grace wants to start to have a particular group from th echurch featured each year. I volunteered to organize a Scottish service this year to start off (next year is Jamaica).
For the featured item, we were pleased to have Hailey Brinton play for us: Highland Cathedral (to which tune I had written verses-available on request), Going Home, and Amazing Grace in the processions and service; and volutaries before and after. Myself and Bill Peterson from the church were in kilt and read the lessons, and said the 23rd Psalm in Broad Scots. We had a St. Andrew's Cross flag, heather in the altar flower arrangements, and an insert about Christianity in Scotland and St Andrew in the bulletin. We served shortbread, marmalade, and haggis at coffee hour. All in all, a good church service. Several other local Episcopal churches had St Andrew's celebrations, if not quite so elaborate. Different from a Kirking of the Tartan, but a good cultural/spiritual event. Several folks enquired about the band and the Games - I tried to steer them to Z'hills, of course.
So, this gets me thinking... we could easily put on both a St. Andrew's event (next year) and a Burn's Nicht event (Jan '0 as a fund raiser for the band - the elements are all obvious, we just need to arrange, organize, and promote it. These would not even have to be as show-oriented as the VFW performance, although we could do with another of those, too. Personally, if we want to raise travel money, I'd rather do it by musical/social events like these, than car-washes (but that's just me). What do y'all think? - Maybe we should move the discussion to the Band Business forum rather than the open Beer tent.

We always get a lot of good ideas submitted: golf tournaments, custom cap badges, etc but when it comes to somebody actually doing it things never seem to happen unless the same few people take it on their shoulders to get it done.
I don't have any more free time to take on another project so for something like this to happen we need some new people to step forward and contribute action along with the ideas.
Also their is still lots of opportunity to get sponsors and program advertisers for the Celtic Festival so we need more people contributing there too!
